Cau Do River Bridge

I was stationed at this bridge at the end of my tour. Our job was to provide security for the bridge and to sweep the approach roads for mines every morning. It was not as easy as it sounds. The main bridge is still the same. The railroad bridge has been replaced. During the war there were no trains so it was used for vehicle traffic. As you can see from the concrete marker the Bridge was completed in 1970. The fourth photo is my friend Denny Buschle when he was here in March. I have circled in one of my old pictures the concrete marker on the north side of the bridge. I lived in the old French concrete bunker in the third photo. My Mom had Ohio's Governor Rhodes send me the Ohio flag.

Which Cau Do bridge is in your pictures? There were 2bridges. On the north side of one bridge was CAP HQ for CACO 5. If you continued north you ran into the Danang airfield. On the south side after about 2-3 miles it joined up with Hwy 1. The other bridge was on the road coming from Dogpatch and passed by the turn-off to 1st tank Bn. This road continued south and met the other road about 2-3 miles south. My CAP unit 2-5-5 was based at this bridge. We were a mobile CAP unit. The main village was Phong Le 2. I was CAP commander from April, 1968 to October, 1968 at this unit. I have some pictures of this bridge after it had gotten blown up in Aug 1967 when I was at the bridge with Hotel, 2/1. I have some pictues of it and also recent pictures downloaded from Google Earth. Is this the bridge you were at or was it the other one?

Dan I was a platoon commander, Hotel 2/1 at the Cau Do bridge when it was blown up. Have been looking for some time for a photograph or information regarding this bridge. Would certainly like to see some of the photographs.

I believe the bridge in question was blown up twice. The time I was there it was blown up sometime around August, 1967. I was in Hotel 2/1 Weapons plt (mortars) from Feb67-Mar68. When were you there? If you can send me your email I can send you the pictures I have by attachment.

In late '69 I was a SW3 Seabee in MCB 74 and worked on the piling bracing, etc. on this "new" bridge before I was sent out on other detachments. Crazy memories. Crazy time. Boocoo work.

My cousin Zane Glazar was KIA in September 1968, I believe in the vicinity of this bridge. I am trying to find others who served with him. Please contact meredith729@gmail.com.
