Liberty Bridge

Our first stop was the site of the old Liberty Bridge built by the Marines in 1969. The bridge was destroyed by a flood over 10 years ago and has never been replaced. All you can see are the pilings in the river. The ferrys are now the only way to cross and were fun to watch. The mounain range in the rear of the second last picture is "Charlie Ridge" and on the other side of the river was the "Arizona Territory". The bridge allowed the Marines to travel by truck between An Hoa Combat Base and Danang. Thanh is talking on a cell phone from what we thought was the deep bush country. The coverage here is better than in the US.

The last version of the bridge was built by the Seabees of MCB-3 in early 1969. We created a pre-cast yard in DaNang, and made pre-cast concrete beams. They were attached atop a structure of driven pilings. The idea was for a low profile bridge that could withstand the rainey season. It worked well for quite awhile. Some photos taken in 1993 by returning vets still showed many of the concrete beams. I am proud to have been part of that effort.
